Spider-Man Annual Unveils Miles Morales’ First Superhero Costume

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man Annual #1 by Bryan Edward Hill, Nelson Blake II, Alitha E. Martinez, Mark Bagley, Roberto Poggi, Carlos Lopez and Cory Petit, in stores now.

Miles Morales made his debut in 2011’s Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. The young superhero kicked off his career fighting the Kangaroo on the streets of New York, while wearing a Spider-Man costume very similar to the outfit that belonged to Peter Parker.

For Miles, this was meant to honor Peter’s legacy in the wake of the young hero’s then-recent death. However, the masked Miles was told by multiple passersby and onlookers that what he was doing was actually a disservice to Spider-Man. Miles took those comments to heart and, when he would later star in his very own solo series, he would take on bad guys in his now iconic red and black Spidey costume.

As it turns out, there was another costume before the two we’ve seen. Before Miles would put on a costume to honor Peter Parker, he actually wore a proto-Spider-Man outfit made from scratch in the heat of battle.

In Spider-Man Annual #1, we flash back to a time after Miles Morales gained his superpowers, but was still keeping them a secret. He wasn’t Spider-Man yet, and he hadn’t even used his powers to save anyone. However, all of that changed one fateful evening when Miles was out with his friends Ganke, Brent and Olivia at the launch of a pop-up clothing store. There, Olivia makes him try on a red vest with black squiggly lines, white sleeves and a zipper that goes all the way up to the hood.

That is when a monstrous Skrull decides to crash into the store and attack the people inside. Then, Miles rapidly decides to help, and to hide his identity as he does so. He finds a pair of goggles on a mannequin, zips his vest all the way up and reveals himself to the Skrull as the newest superhero in town.

While this is a far cry from the costume he would later wear, it’s unmistakably Spider-Man, giving off a vibe not dissimilar to the original Scarlet Spider outfit. With the googles and the home-made aesthetic, it even has a Marvel Cinematic Universe-quality to it, somewhat resembling what Peter Parker wore to take down the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

While a fun moment, and one that led to Miles learning a valuable lesson regarding power and responsibility, it’s doubtful we’ll see this costume make a return — but then again, who knows? Maybe Miles is still keeping it stashed away somewhere, in case of a rainy day.
