Infinity War: 15 Toys That Already Spoiled The Movie

Avengers: Infinity War might be the most anticipated event film in decades. Marvel Studios spent a decade building up to the release, bringing together one of the largest cast of characters from multiple franchises. As such, Marvel has been keeping details of the film and its plot under lock and key. At the same time, there has been a flood of merchandise unleashed before the film’s release, ensuring that Marvel makes as much money as possible. This has resulted in an ages-old problem: toys spoiling the movie.

Now, nothing in this list is for certain. Infinity War has yet to be released, so the plot details are still unknown. It’s possible that the toys listed here don’t actually spoil anything. In fact, there are plenty of examples of toys being released that depict scenes that don’t even come close to occurring in the actual movie. Lego infamously released a set of Iron Man fighting the Mandarin for Iron Man 3 (2013). In the movie, the Mandarin was revealed to be an actor, and Iron Man did not get into any sort of battle with him. Still, these items seem to reveal certain details that Marvel has been trying to keep under wraps. For Marvel Studios, play time is over.

IRON SPIDER’S ARMS

Lego iron spider

When it was first revealed that Tony Stark had built Peter an upgraded suit at the end of Spider-Man:Homecoming (2017), fans noticed that it bore a resemblance to the Iron Spider suit. The armor first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #529 (2006) by J. Michael Straczynski and Ron Garney. It was built by Tony Stark as a gift to Peter, who was serving as Stark’s protege at the time.

Of course, one major difference was the lack of mechanical arms. The trailer for Infinity War (2018) showed the Iron Spider suit in action, san arms. Fans initially assumed that they wouldn’t appear in the film. Then the Titan Heroes figure was revealed, showing Spider-Man with mechanical arms. If they were meant to be a surprise for the film, consider it ruined.

BRUCE BANNER IS HULKBUSTING

Ever since it debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), fans have been waiting for the Hulkbuster armor to return. In all honesty, why wouldn’t Tony always just use his most powerful armor? Well, it turns out that Thanos is a big enough threat to warrant its use, as the first trailer revealed that the Hulkbuster would be making an appearance. It also showed Bruce Banner standing next to a detached Hulkbuster arm.

Of course, the trailer doesn’t show Tony Stark inside the armor. The Lego set The Hulkbuster Smash-Up seems to suggest that Tony won’t be wearing it in the film. In fact, the packaging shows Bruce Banner popping out of the armor. Of course, Lego sets are notoriously inaccurate, but this would be a strange change to make.

THOR’S EYE

Marvel actually pulled off shocking its audience by keeping the fate of Thor’s eye a secret at the end of Thor: Ragnarok (2017). During a fight with Hela, Thor loses one of his eyes (leaving him looking like Odin). Part of what made this so surprising was that Marvel adjusted footage in the trailer, showing Thor with both eyes during the final battle. Even early footage from Infinity War (2018) was adjusted to hide Thor’s missing eye.

Unfortunately, it looks like Marvel won’t pull it off again. When Hasbro began revealing images of their Infinity War line of Marvel Legends figures, fans noticed something strange about one of the Thor’s. A part of the second Infinity War wave, Hasbro is releasing a Thor with both eyes. This figure is clearly inspired from late in the film, suggesting Thor gets his eye back. That, or someone at Hasbro really screwed up.

IRON MAN’S MODULAR ARMOR

Bandai SH Figuarts Avengers Infinity War Iron Man

Tony Stark seems to get a new armor in every movie. That being said, the upgrades usually aren’t that impressive. The Mark 7 armor in Avengers (2012) didn’t seem all that different than the Mark 6. Similarly, the armor he wore in Civil War (2016) and Homecoming (2017) seemed to only have superficial differences. Many fans assume that he only upgrades his armor so much so that Marvel can sell more toys.

The Lego set Thanos: Ultimate Battle, however, revealed an Iron Man minifigure with giant thrusters on his back. Things were confirmed when S.H. Figuarts revealed their line up of Infinity War figures. The Iron Man in this wave includes modular pieces, showing that Tony can form laser cannons and possibly other devices anywhere on the armor. Finally, an upgrade worth buying another toy for.

THOR’S BEST FRIENDS, ROCKET AND GROOT

Marvel has wisely resisted showing footage of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy together. Aside from footage shown to convention attendees, the only public has only been shown Thor asking the Guardians who the hell they are. Seeing these two teams together is probably one of the most anticipated aspects of the Infinity War film.

Apparently, Thor is going to be spending a lot of time with Rocket Raccoon and Groot. During the events of Ragnarok (2017), Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, was destroyed by Hela. The set Thor’s Weapon Quest reveals that the three characters are going to be spending a lot of time together. There’s also a Marvel Legends three pack of Thor with Rocket and Groot, further confirming the trio’s team up/road trip.

STORMBREAKER

Of course, the identity of Thor’s new weapon was also being kept secret until the film’s release. There were many rumors, with fans speculating that Thor would get a hammer similar to the one brandished by Ultimate Thor. This alternate universe version of the character carried a much more elaborate looking weapon, which looked like a combination of a hammer and an axe.

Multiple toys have been released, however, that revealed Thor’s new weapon to be Stormbreaker. In the comics, this is the hammer carried by Beta Ray Bill. Even more shocking, the toys revealed that the handle seems to be made up of part of Groot’s body. It seems like Groot and Thor are going to be growing very, very close during Infinity War.

CULL OBSIDIAN’S NAME

Marvel Legends Cull Obsidian Build-A-Figure

A character like Thanos is much too powerful to have basic henchmen working for him. Instead, he has the terrifying Black Order serving him. They are also known as the Cull Obsidian, and they are made up of Black Dwarf, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight and Supergiant. The Black Order is set to appear in Infinity War, although not exactly as they appear in the comics.

A large character began appearing on promotional material, and fans struggled to identify him. The Lego set Sanctum Sanctorum includes a minifigure named Cull Obsidian, but it wasn’t certain that this was the same creature that appeared on the posters. The character’s identity was confirmed, however, when Hasbro announced Cull Obsidian — who apparently is the renamed Black Dwarf — build-a-figure for the Marvel Legends line.

THANOS’ ARMOR

Iron Man vs Thanos hero vision

When Thanos first appeared during the end credits in The Avengers (2012), he seemed to be wearing an outfit pulled right out of the comics. When he resurfaced in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), he was once again wearing a fairly comic accurate outfit. So, it was a little shocking when Thanos debuted in the Infinity War trailer not wearing his classic armor. Instead, his head and arms were bare.

It was suggested by the filmmakers that since Thanos holds the gauntlet, he no longer feels the need for the armor. Apparently, though, the action figure version of the character still needs his armor. The two pack Iron Man vs Thanos: Battle Set shows Thanos in his full armor and bearing the gauntlet. The toy makers just thought the armor would move more figures… or it could be Thanos’ final form!

CULL OBSIDIAN AND EBONY MAW ATTACK NYC

lego sanctum sanctorum showdown

The events of Infinity War clearly take place across the globe. From the trailers, it’s clear that Wakanda and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum both get attacked at some point. While the battle of Wakanda is shown, the Sanctum Sanctorum fight is much more mysterious. All the trailer shows is a ship appearing above New York City, while Doctor Strange and Iron Man look up in shock. Who exactly they’re preparing to defend themselves from is never fully shown.

Lego released a large set based around the Sanctum Sanctorum fight, and it’s very elaborate. It contains both Dr Strange’s house, along with a building that house’s Peter Parker’s apartment. The included minifigs are Dr Strange, Iron Spider and two members of the Black Order: Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian. This heavily suggests that these two are tasked with retrieving the time stone from the Sanctum.

THOR’S USING HEIMDALL’S SWORD

Infinity War Marvel Legends 3 Pack Groot Thor Rocket

Apparently, Thor’s entire storyline is being spoiled by toys. As previously stated, Hasbro is releasing a Marvel Legends three-pack including Thor, Rocket and Groot. What’s cool about this set is that it includes the first figure of teenage Groot, who debuted during the end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017). The set also marks the first Marvel Legends figure to reflect Thor’s missing eye.

Since the set seems to be based on Thor’s journey to replace his hammer, he doesn’t come with Stormbreaker. Instead, he comes with a sword, which has been identified as Heimdall’s. Marvel Legends have a better track record in terms of movie accuracy, so this leaves one major question: if Thor is using Heimdall’s sword, where’s Heimdall and is he ok? This set would suggest that he’s not doing so hot.

HULKBUSTER FIGHTS OVER THE SOUL STONE

lego hulkbuster smash up

The biggest mystery leading up to Infinity War is the location of the soul stone. Considering that each of the other stones has been tied to other Avengers, fans have been trying to figure out which hero is connected to the soul stone. There are plenty of theories, but nothing is certain.

A major clue may have been dropped by Lego, however. Each Infinity War set comes with an Infinity Stone, which can all be collected and placed in a Lego gauntlet. Each stone comes with the appropriate set of characters (Dr. Strange’s set comes with the time, Vision’s comes with the mind, etc). The soul stone comes with the Hulkbuster Smash Up set. Did Lego have nowhere else to put it, or does the Hulkbuster armor have some connection to the soul stone?

THOR’S NOT JUST GETTING A NEW HAMMER

Thor makes another appearance on this list, this time thanks to Hot Toys. The Hong Kong based company is known for making hyper realistic (and expensive) action figures. Promotional images for their Infinity War figures have started to pop up, and once again, fans noticed something interesting about Thor.

While this figure still only has one eye, it does come with a fancy new vest for Thor. While a new outfit isn’t necessarily a big deal, the figure comes with electricity effects for the vest. It seems that Thor obtains a new harness that interacts with his lightning powers. Is this the magic belt that Happy mentioned during Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)? Whatever it is, it’s clear that it’s more than just a flashy fashion statement.

SHURI REMOVES VISION’S INFINITY STONE

In the MCU, the Vision was brought to life when Ultron used the mind stone to build a living robotic body and it was combined with Tony Stark’s JARVIS AI. Since then, he’s served as a loyal member of the Avengers and even began a romantic relationship with the Scarlet Witch. Obviously, having one of the stones embedded in his head makes the Vision a target for Thanos’ forces.

In fact, the first trailer for Infinity War contained a shocking image of someone forcibly removing the stone from Vision’s head. It was assumed that this one of Thanos’ henchmen, but a Lego set tells a different story. The Lego set Corvus Glave Thresher Attack suggests that Shuri is actually the one to remove the stone.

IRON MAN TEAMS UP WITH STAR-LORD AND GAMORA

Lego infinity war iron man star lord gamora

If the toys are accurate, it seems like the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to be splitting up for most of Infinity War. Rocket and Groot are clearly going on a road trip with Thor, leaving the rest of the team’s whereabouts a mystery.

Once again, Lego sets are not necessarily movie accurate. Also, it’s obvious that there’s going to be some sort of massive showdown at the end of Infinity War, likely involving most of the cast. So, this might be a bit of a stretch, but it’s still worth looking at. Thanos: Ultimate Battle depicts a fight between Thanos and Iron Man, Star-Lord and Gamora. Does this mean that Tony Stark takes to the stars with Peter Quill? He did briefly join the Guardians in the comics, so it’s not the most far-fetched idea.

THOR TRAVELING TO NIDAVELLIR

Lego thor groot rocket

So, about that road trip Thor takes with Rocket and Groot. Considering that it hasn’t even been officially confirmed, it’s not known where they’re going. Based on the evidence, however, it’s clear that they’re going somewhere to get Thor a new hammer. Why? Didn’t Thor learn that he doesn’t need a hammer in Ragnarok (2017)? Since he can’t just go to Home Depot and buy a regular hammer, and considering his travel companions, he must be going somewhere pretty crazy.

The Lego set Thor’s Weapon Quest identifies the location as Nidavellir, a realm populated by dwarven blacksmiths. Once again, Lego isn’t always accurate, but this would be a huge thing for them to just make up. It’s not like the average kid knows what Nidavellir is, so it seems like Thor’s going to be getting his new weapon from this particular realm.
